REVIEW: 50/50

My Rating:

They say laughter is the best medicine, right? Cancer can be a touchy subject for some people if not handled correctly, let alone a comedy about cancer. Thankfully 50/50 finds the perfect balance between comedy and real human emotions.

50/50's screenplay was based on the real life experiences of writer Will Reiser as he battled cancer and how his friend Seth Rogen helped him through it. 50/50 follows the story of Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he tries to deal with a recent cancer diagnosis. Adam has a rare form of cancer growing along his spine, his chances of survival are 50/50. Helping him through the diagnosis are his lovable oaf of a friend, Kyle (Seth Rogen), his girlfriend Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard), a timid but caring therapist Katie (Anna Kendrick) and his overbearing Mother (Anjelica Huston).

A lot has to be said about the acting in this film. JGL is proving to be one of the best actors of this generation. This movie could have failed if he had overplayed his role by trying to force emotion; instead his performance was natural and honest. Same can be said of Seth Rogen's performance, because he actual lived these events I didn't feel like he was acting but reliving memories. The witty banter between JGL and Rogen felt honest and real. Anna Kendrick is also proving to be a solid actress. There was a real sense of chemistry between Kendrick and JGL. Her performance here, I think, was better than in "Up in the Air". It won't be long before she moves from supporting to lead actress.  The only performance that I took issue with was Howard's. She doesn't feel like the cold bitch she is trying to play, but this is only a minor grievance.

Overall 50/50 is an honest comedy worth checking out. Go see it.
