It's that time of week again, and we've got one of the biggest and arguably most anticipated movies yet this year finally releasing. Hit the jump to check out what's new to theaters this week...
Sucker Punch
Length: 1 hr 49 min
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Written by: Zack Snyder and Steve Shibuya
Cast: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone
Rated: PG-13
Synopsis:
A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility. (IMDb)
This looks like a movie that could easily swing into the cult classic list (much like Snyder's 2006 film, 300), or it could fall into a pit of films that no one wants to remember. Snyder is sticking to his visual style that he honed on 300, and perfected with Watchmen, but both of those films were based on previous works. Is Snyder himself a good enough writer to pull off another visually captivating film, or Sucker Punch be relying too much on its visuals and action to create a story of any depth? We'll see. I've always been a fan of Snyder (from all the way back in the Dawn of the Dead days), but this is one I can't leave to the critics; I'll have to determine for myself.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules
Length: 1 hr 36 min
Directed by: David Bowers
Written by: Gabe Sachs & Jeff Judah (Screenplay), Jeff Kinney (Book)
Cast: Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Robert Capron, Steve Zahn
Rated: PG
Synopsis:
Back in middle school after summer vacation, Greg Heffley and his older brother Rodrick must deal with their parents' misguided attempts to have them bond. (IMDb)
Okay, bare with me. I think this movie has some potential. Within the first minute of the Trailer, I was laughing. The second in the film series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid looks like it could pull off some solid Home Alone style, wholesome family comedy. I'm sure it's loaded with jokes for the kids, the parents, and anyone in between. However, if you don't go with anyone under 15, don't be caught dead in the theater. Trust me.
Miral
Length: 1 hr 52 min
Directed by: Julian Schnabel
Written by: Rula Jebreal
Cast: Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass, Willem Dafoe
Rated: R
Synopsis:
A drama centered on an orphaned Palestinian girl growing up in the wake of Arab-Israeli war who finds herself drawn into the conflict. (IMDb)
Woah, from the director of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Looks like an emotional roller coaster, developing solid characters and pushing some political points-of-view pretty profusely. Although this doesn't really look like my bag of rice, I could see it being popular among the liberal elite in the select cities it is playing.
Conclusion:
If you're into action and have been a fan of Zack Snyder's previous work, Sucker Punch might be the film for you. It's got some blonde bombshells kicking ass, sweet cinematography, and will definitely be packed with Snyder's cult following. For a wholesome, Christian movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is going to be up your alley. It's going to have something for everyone, but not everything for anyone. Be cautious. Make good decisions with your movie choices this weekend, we may be in for a drought in the coming months.
