Thankfully the weekend is right around the corner, but are there any good movies to go see this weekend? Hit the jump and find out what is coming out this weekend and what you should be watching.
Red Riding Hood
Length: 1 hr 40 min
Rated: PG-13
Directed by: Catherine Hardwicke
Written by: David Johnson
Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, Gary Oldman
Synopsis:
Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. Panic grips the town as Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast-one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect...and bait.
Did you make it through the synopsis without thinking of Twilight? No? Neither did I. Hollywood has found a money-making formula: Dumb girl, hot guy, sex, and werewolves. Slap those things together in no particular order or fashion and you get a movie that preteen girls drool over, more importantly spend money on. This movie is Twilight afterbirth.
Battle: Los Angeles
Length: 1 hr 56 min
Rated: PG-13
Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman
Written by: Christopher Bertolini
Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Ramon Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Peña, Ne-Yo
Synopsis:
For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world - Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.
When I saw the original trailer for this movie I could not help but get excited. The energy and the epic scale that was built up in the trailer was infectious. Do I think this will ultimately be a good movie? No, but is should prove to be a fun ride for most, if not the entire film. I like to think of this movie as an Independence Day knockoff. Which isn't really a bad thing because I enjoyed Independence Day, even though it was painfully cheesy.
Mars Needs Moms
Length: 1 hr 28 min
Rated: PG
Directed by: Simon Wells
Written by: Simon Wells, Wendy Wells, Berkeley Breathed
Cast: Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois, Mindy Sterling
Synopsis:
Take out the trash, eat your broccoli-who needs moms, anyway? Nine-year-old Milo (Seth Green) finds out just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she's nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. Produced by the team behind "Disney's A Christmas Carol" and "The Polar Express," "Mars Needs Moms" showcases Milo's quest to save his mom-a wild adventure in Disney Digital 3D(TM) and IMAX (R) 3D that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling). With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom-in more ways than one. Based on the Book by Berkeley Breathed.
Ugh... ok where to begin. First of all, what a dumb premise for a movie. Really? Mars needs Moms? A super advance race of humanoids who have mastered space-flight "lost" all their mothers? And instead of genetically manufacturing surrogates, or making robots, they abduct human females who are incapable of naturally living on Mars? To what? Play baby-sitter? God this is stupid. Secondly, the animation for this movie looks dump. The character models aren't quite cartoon-esque nor are they quite realistic. So what we are left with are sudo-realistic animations, and since there is no such thing as sudo-real, the animations just look bad. Thankfully Rango is still in theaters, if you are looking for a animated family movie, go see that.
Conclusion:
If you are a guy, I would recommend going to see Battle: Los Angeles because it is the one new release that doesn't make me want to blow my brains out. If you are a fan of Twilight, than you have probably already preordered tickets for Red Riding Hood and nothing I say or do will sway your decision. If you are going to the movies as a family this weekend and want to see something for the kiddies, go see Rango. It is entertaining for young and old alike.
