FRIDAY PREVIEW: FEB 25th

With the Oscars this weekend, there isn't a chance we'll have a good movie on our hands, right?

Right. The drought continues...

Hall Pass

Length: 1 hr 45 min
Rated: R
Directed by: Bobby & Peter Farrelly
Written by: Pete Jones, Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly & Kevin Barnett
Cast: Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer

Official Synopsis:
Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalizing their marriages: granting them a "hall pass," one week of freedom to do whatever they want...no questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred. But it isn't long before they discover that their expectations of the single life-and themselves-are completely, and hilariously, out of sync with reality. © Warner Bros

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Owen Wilson's latest crap trap. Once again, Hollywood comes out with its latest 'hilarious' sex-themed comedy where a couple of girls get jealous because of their counter parts cheating on them, or some variant of that. I'm sure I'm not that far off. Didn't No Strings Attached and Just Go With It just come out? On the plus side, you get a couple different actors in this one. However, just like every other movie, rinse and repeat.

Drive Angry (3D)

Length: 1 hr 44 min
Rated: R
Directed by: Patrick Lussier
Written by: Todd Farmer, Patrick Lussier
Cast: Nicholas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner

Synopsis:
Milton (Nicolas Cage) has broken out of Hell to prevent the cult that murdered his daughter from sacrificing his infant granddaughter. He is being pursued by 'The Accountant' (William Fichtner), a supernatural operative of Satan who has been sent to bring Milton back to Hell. (Wikipedia)

I think the one person in Hollywood that understands how overdone certain movies are is the trailer voice-over guy. After seeing this one, I'm not sure if this is a drama or comedy. Nicholas Cage is back at it once again, attempting to form sentences in front of a camera and convince people this isn't actually a home movie where he awkwardly fills up the screen looking for attention. The plot is right out of Ghost Rider (remember how good that was?) and looks to be relying on dumb balls-to-the-wall action to get any positive reviews. Two maybe redeeming factors: William Fichtner and Amber Heard. Thats it though, I'd recommend not springing the $15 for a 3D piece of garbage. You can do that at home.

Shelter

Length: 1 hr 52 min
Rated: R
Directed by: Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein
Written by: Michael Cooney
Cast: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Synopsis:
A female forensic psychiatrist (Moore) discovers that all of one of her patient's multiple personalities are murder victims. She will have to find out what's happening before her time is finished.

Can we just assume every movie this week sucks? Apparently so. I don't really know what to say about this one. The Number 23 and The Butterfly Effect much? That's the best I've got. I don't really know if this movie is even being released, I can't seem to find a reliable source. Don't worry though, I'm doing you a favor.

Of Gods and Men

Length: 2 hr 2 min
Rated: PG-13
Directed by: Xavier Beauvois
Written by: Xavier Beauvois, Etienne Comar
Cast: Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale, Olivier Rabourdin

Official Synopsis:
Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996. © Sony Pictures Classics

Relief! Ah, this brings me back to my Matrix days. Purely because of Lambert Wilson though. From the little I know about the film, it has a great trailer soundtrack and is in French. And has Lambert Wilson. And it's rated PG-13. I've read a few initial reviews that have only good things to say, so we might just have a dark horse in our midst. However, with it's limited release, don't be expecting to enjoy Of Gods and Men anytime soon.

Conclusion:
With the Razzies on Saturday and the Oscars on Sunday, go out and try and find one of the nominees up for anything in either of those award shows. With the Razzies, you're sure to be entertained. With the Oscars, you're going to be blown away. This is your last chance to see the nominees before they are forgotten and only the winners are remembered. My recommendations: The Fighter, The King's Speech, or Black Swan.

Make good decisions this weekend.
