GOLDEN GLOBE PREDICTIONS

The award season is upon us again, which means we get to make predictions on who/what we think should/will win (there is a difference). It also means you get to see how awesome our predictions are, or how terribly wrong we are.

The Golden Globes will be held this Sunday (January 16th) and the list of nominations has been made public, lets take a look shall we.

Josh's Predictions
Mark's Predictions
Agreed Upon Predictions

Best Motion Picture – Drama:

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network

Josh - No real surprises here with the nominations, all of these movies deserve to be here. Although I would have liked to see True Grit bump off The Fighter to make the short list. Why do I think The Social Network will win Best Motion Picture? Easy, it has a tidal wave of support behind it. This movie is already being called the zeitgeist of our generation and it has already won Best Picture from the National Board of Review as well as from numerous Critic Circles. Oh yeah, and it was a really good movie, that helps too.

Mark - Without a doubt, The King's Speech won itself the best picture award at this years Golden Globes. It's fantastic cast and surprisingly compelling story made for an actual enjoyable historical drama. There aren't any fictitious works that could pass this one up, however its best competitor: The Social Network

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama:

Halle Berry – Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman – Black Swan
Michelle Williams – Blue Valentine

Josh - For the amount of work that Natalie Portman put in for Black Swan, she shouldn't have any trouble locking this one down. This was probably a career best for Portman. Let's just hope that her upcoming romantic comedies and superhero movies don't tarnish her career.

Mark - Natalie Portman absolutely became the character she played in Black Swan, learning all the elements of ballet, while playing a completely mentally torn monster. Natalie showed me that she has what it takes to actually become a persona.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama:

Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Colin Firth – The King’s Speech
James Franco – 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg – The Fighter

Josh - I have a feeling Colin Firth is going to get robbed again this year. Riding the wave that is The Social Network, Eisenberg should walk away with this one. James Franco is the dark horse in this category; there is a chance that he could walk away with this one as well. I have to say I am a little surprised that Jeff Bridges isn’t on this short list.

Mark - Colin Firth's totally convincing stammer in the film The King's Speech wasn't nearly enough to win him the Golden Globe for best Actor. Luckily for him, he can combine all of his layers at once. The intense frustration and weakness of King George VI won me over at the theater.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical:

Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist

Josh - This was defiantly not the year for comedies or musicals, god look at that terrible list. I would rather see The Kids are All Right walk away with this one, but I have a feeling that it could very well be Alice in Wonderland.

Mark - Josh was right. This isn't the year for comedies. However, I think The Kids Are All Right has got this one in the bag. A refreshing story that can only be concocted in the generation of artificial insemination, this film shouldn't have a problem. And as always, it's good to see Mark Ruffalo playing the character he plays best.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical:

Annette Bening – The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway – Love And Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie – The Tourist
Julianne Moore – The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone – Easy A

Josh - I’m predicting an upset on this one. I am going to go with Emma Stone.

Mark - No contest. Julianne Moore. Did you hear her Boston accent in 30 Rock?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical:

Johnny Depp – Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp – The Tourist
Paul Giamatti – Barney’s Version
Jake Gyllenhaal – Love And Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey – Casino Jack

Josh - I would love to see Paul Giamatti win, but I have a feeling Johnny Depp will get the award for one of his two mistakes last year. I’m going with Alice in Wonderland.

Mark - Spacey yet again plays another shady character (Jack Abramoff) in Casino Jack. Since he is the king of playing moral and ethical abominations of characters, this one should be an obvious pie to the face.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:

Amy Adams – The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter – The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis – Black Swan
Melissa Leo – The Fighter
Jacki Weaver – Animal Kingdom

Josh - This one could be anyone’s guess, but I am going to say Melissa Leo. She was fantastic in The Fighter.

Mark - I have never before noticed how important casting is before I saw Black Swan. No one else could pull off what Kunis did in the film, she oozes that rebellious, bad-girl personality. I have to say that Mila played her character exactly how it should have been played in Black Swan.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:

Christian Bale – The Fighter
Michael Douglas – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield – The Social Network
Jeremy Renner – The Town
Geoffrey Rush – The King’s Speech

Josh - I'm probably wrong about this one, but I am going to say Andrew Garfield. Like Eisenberg, I think Garfied could ride the wave of The Social Network and take this one home. There has been a lot of talk about this kid ever since he landed the role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-man reboot.

Mark - It's hard for me to not see Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, but now that I've seen The King's Speech, I stand corrected. His wild, unapologetic and commanding performance in the film was second to none.

Best Animated Feature Film:

Despicable Me
How To Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3

Josh - Duh.

Mark - Ditto. I guess How To Train Your Dragon does have a fighting chance, and Sylvain Chomet's latest, The Illusionist does invoke the idea of perhaps a mature animated picture squeaking out a win. But, in all honesty, it's Toy Story 3.

Best Foreign Language Film:

Biutiful (Mexico, Spain)
The Concert (France)
The Edge (Russia)
I Am Love (Italy)
In A Better World (Denmark)

Josh - Since I live in Amurica – where none of these movies are from – I have no clue what will win. Biutiful has a lot of buzz around it so I will put my money there.

Mark - I agree again with Josh on this one. I haven't had the luxury to see any of these films, but I have always held a lot of stock in Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, The Sea Inside), so I'm going to have to pick Biutiful as well. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu has shown me he knows his stuff with both Babel and 21 Grams under his belt, so I can only imagine Biutiful with the Globe.

So that's it, those are our predictions for this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards. Let us know what you think. What would you have picked? Drop us a comment and tell us.
